Evaporative Cooler Wall Controller Replacement Guide (Breezair, Braemar, Brivis, Bonaire, CoolBreeze)

When an evaporative cooler stops responding, the wall controller is usually the first thing people blame, but it isn’t always the faulty part. This guide explains how to tell whether the problem is the wall controller, the connecting cable (loom) or the control box on the roof, and how to find the right replacement for Breezair, Braemar, Coolair, Brivis, Bonaire and CoolBreeze coolers.

Wall controller, loom or control box: which part has failed?

An evaporative cooler control system has three main parts:

• Wall controller: the keypad or touchscreen inside the house.
• Loom (cable): the multi-core cable running from the wall controller up to the cooler.
• Control box: the electronics on the cooler itself that switch the fan motor, pump and drain valve.

Common symptoms and the likely cause:

• Blank screen, no lights at all: check the power and the isolator switch on the roof first. If the power is on, the loom, the control box or the controller itself may be at fault.
• Screen works but the cooler doesn’t respond: often a damaged loom or plug, or a control box fault.
• Some buttons don’t work, or the screen is faded, cracked or flickering: usually the wall controller.
• A fault or error code is displayed: the code points to a specific system (water, drain, motor or communication). Note it down before replacing anything, because many codes point to a water or sensor problem rather than a failed controller.
• Cooler runs by itself or won’t turn off: usually a control box fault.

Checking or replacing control boxes and 240V wiring should be done by a qualified technician or licensed electrician.

How to find the right replacement controller

1. Note the brand and model of your cooler from the label on the cooler cabinet (for example a Breezair EXQ, a Braemar LCQ or a Brivis Contour).
2. Note the controller model, printed on the controller face or on the back once it’s unclipped from the wall plate.
3. Check the cable type. Different controller generations use different looms and plugs, for example 4-pin and 6-pin looms on Seeley (Breezair, Braemar, Coolair) coolers. The loom must match both the controller and the control box.
4. Check whether the control box needs to change too. Some newer controllers only work with a matching control box, so an upgrade may need both parts.

Before you replace your wall controller

• Turn the power off at the isolator for a minute, then back on. This resets many control faults.
• Check the loom plugs at both ends for corrosion, loose pins or damage from rodents or roof work.
• Write down any error code and check it against your cooler’s manual. Water-supply or drain faults are more common than failed controllers.
• Replace the wall controller battery if your model has a clock or memory battery.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit a newer controller to my old evaporative cooler?

Sometimes. Newer controllers often need a matching control box and loom, so an upgrade may involve more than one part. Check with us before ordering.

Is the controller the same for my ducted heater and evaporative cooler?

Not always. Some homes use a combined heating and cooling controller, others use separate controllers. Check the model number on your current controller.

How long does the loom need to be?

Measure the cable run from the wall controller position up to the cooler, allowing extra for routing through the roof space. Our looms are 20 m, which suits most homes.
